The weather is starting to get cooler, which means it’s time for fall leaves, warm sweaters, and sealing asphalt. Sealing asphalt is an important item to add to your routine maintenance, as it protects the asphalt from moisture seeping in, which can freeze and break apart your asphalt over the winter. Widel was hired to seal and stripe the parking lot at Mercy in Chesterfield. We first swept away any debris, then applied a tar-based sealant. After it set, we stripped the parking lot for parking spaces. Not only did the parking lot look new and professional once it was done, it will now last longer, and be protected against the upcoming winter. We recommend resealing your asphalt every other year, and fall is the perfect season to do it! We are excited to showcase a project that highlights some of the unique work that we do at Widel Paving. The Coca Cola project exhibits some of the amazing concrete work that Widel can do in both a residential and corporate setting. Widel was hired by Coca Cola to pour a new 8 inch concrete reinforced floor for an addition to the plant to brew fresh tea. The nature of the manufacturing setting called for rebar to reinforce the concrete to withstand the traffic and weight of the equipment in the new tea room addition. Pool weather is here, and we were able to get some pools ready for summer! When Widel Paving began work on one job, the pool deck was broken in multiple areas and in need of repair. We tore out the existing broken concrete and poured 5 inches of exposed aggregate to match the existing pool deck. Aggregate can be a great option for areas like pool decks to prevent slipping. Potholes are a frustration for everybody, and often plague areas with older pavement. As pavement ages, it can begin to crack. Those cracks expand when water freezes in them during the winter, and eventually water can accumulate underneath the pavement, which also expands when frozen. When the ice melts, you are left with cracked pavement with an empty cavity underneath. This collapses and forms a pothole. When Widel Paving began working on a job at a strip mall in South County, there was a huge pothole in need of repair. To begin repairing it, we first had to remove the existing 3 inches of asphalt. When we were asked to work on our daycare’s concrete parking lot, we couldn’t say no—after all, we drove on it nearly every day for our sons! The existing parking lot was in need of repair, and the owner ultimately decided to do a full replacement. We excavated the existing 6-inch-thick concrete, and removed 12-20 inches of unusable subbase to prep the area. We joked that we should have also been paid for child care as all of the little faces were plastered to the windows watching us as we worked. For the new parking lot, we installed 200 ton of base rock, compacted to grade, poured 120 yards of concrete between 6-7 inches thick, saw cut on 10 foot centers, and re-striped the parking stalls. It’s always satisfying to transform something in need of repair to something high quality, and of course, it was gratifying to have such an appreciative audience for this job! Churches may have their doors open to all, but that won’t do you much good if you can’t get on the sidewalk. When Widel Paving began working with a local church in St. Peters, there were no ADA compliant sidewalks available. The ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) has standards for sidewalk widths, slopes, and ramps so they can be easily accessible for all. We excavated 6 tandem loads of dirt, framed the sidewalks per ADA specifications, poured 21 yards of concrete at 4 inches thick, installed the appropriate curbs, installed a box drain and grooved every 5 feet.
